Despite the grey, rainy days, Frome remains a great destination in the winter months. We’ve selected a few of our favourites from the fabulous array of Independent shops, galleries and eateries for a cosy wintery day out in Frome.
If you park up at the Cheese & Grain, pop in and see if they have a daytime event on - every Wednesday for example, they have a flea and antique market. There is also the town’s weekly market running on a Wednesday outside the library.
Round the corner from the library, you will find The Black Swan Arts centre which has artist studios and two exhibition spaces to discover. Within this building, you will find The River House, a lively cafe serving a wholesome and delicious all day menu…perfect for brunch. Projects is also round the corner on the bridge and is a lovely calm spot for a cuppa, loads of amazing veggie options and gorgeous cakes too.
Weave your way through the town centre, and head up Cheap Street with Frome’s famous spring-fed leat. The cobbled street is home to a host of independent shops. Hunting Raven is a brilliant long standing bookshop, with really knowledgeable staff and a great selection. Neighbour Utility is a welcome treat of vintage homewares, and you can pick up some botanical treasures from Moss Archives a few doors down. Just round the corner is the brilliant Raves from the Grave, our beloved independent record shop.
From there, you can wind your way back to the market place, and head up our other famous cobbled streets, Stony Street and Catherine’s Hill, laden with more beautiful independent shops.
If lunch with a view is what you are after, drop into Little Walcot, with it’s brilliant position at the foot of the Hill.
From here you can begin your browsing up the cobbles, starting at Sherlock & Pages for a carefully considered collection of fiction and non fiction focused around nature and history; SEED for homewares, jewellery and clothing; Assembly for a brilliant range of sustainable menswear; all your utilitarian essentials at Frome Hardware; a dash of nostalgia in Frome Model Centre; and a lush green haven that is Pilea selling a wide and unusual range of plants and flowers.
For a relaxed sit down after the climb, grab a coffee for the final push up the hill from the brilliant locals favourite, Moo & Two or enjoy the stunning RISE Chapel setting of the Rye Bakery with lots of space and some amazing baked treats all made in house from great ingredients.
Frome shops are often shut on a Monday, so do check opening times before heading into our brilliant little town.
