This sculptural and functional five footed bowl has been turned and shaped from Ash wood and then scorched in the Japanese method of Shou Sugi Ban. Shou Sugi Ban is an ancient Japanese process of preserving wood with fire, transforms the surface from pale tones to a matte jet black. Arbor products are designed and made in Devon by Alex Carpenter just a stones throw from the River Exe.

Using only locally sourced sustainable woods, the products are often varied and imperfect by the nature of the available timbers and what they offer in creative partnership.
Originally studying Forestry Management, Alex switched focus to a career in design. After more than a decade of studio experience, the need was felt to go back to the woods, to create with his own hands and be in touch with materials at a source level. 

Design and handcraft play a part in each item where the natural and man made meet, and function and aesthetic object are created.
