SGW Lab

SGW Lab was founded in London by Japanese ceramic artist Yuta Segawa. Yuta is very well known for his miniature pots that he throws individually by hand after honing the advanced ceramic skills he learnt in Japan and China. Over many years, he has created more than five hundred original glazes that he uses to decorate each piece that leaves the studio.

SGW Lab was established to expand the scale of his personal work and into expand the possibilities of production. The most important element to Yuta when batch producing objects in the 21st century is the celebration of (less productive but) imperfect handwork than machines. It's important we see and feel each piece as individual. The major inspiration for the studio's approach was William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement, seeing art as an expression of pleasure within human labour.

SGW Lab has a slogan: "The Art of people"; the title of a lecture delivered by William Morris in 1879 at the Birmingham Society of Arts and School of Design. Morris explained the importance of craftsmanship in society.

The mission of SGW LAB is to think about the significance of craftsmanship in the context of Morris. To believe in the worth of human labour and to explore and practice the beautiful possibilities created by the hand made.
